Many of these folks--grandparents, parents, neighbors, friends--struggle to find housing that suits their needs. Many homes are too large, or not designed to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers. Some are too far from daily amenities. Others are too close to the pollution and noise of the freeway. When affordable housing options are limited, seniors often end up living in substandard or poorly maintained housing, which poses a variety of health risks. Geographic isolation is associated with higher rates of depression and decreased physical well-being.
